How to write an essay for university

  1. How many words does it have to be?
  2. Grab some scrap paper, you'll need one paragraph for the introduction and one paragraph for the conclusion.
  3. Jot down a rough idea of themes/ideas/subtopics that you need to cover. Allocate a paragraph to each of these.
  4. Divide the number of words the essay needs to be, by the number of paragraphs you've jotted down.
  5. This equals how many words you need to aim for in each paragraph and gives you an outline of structure for your essay.
  6. Your introduction needs to answer / summarise the essay question or title and mentions what you're going to discuss (mention each theme, idea, subtopic etc).
  7. Each paragraph will cover one theme/idea/subtopic.
  8. The conclusion needs to again, briefly summarise and answer the essay title or question.
  9. Never directly copy unless you are quoting (then remember to reference it), but reword, because most colleges/universities use sophisticated anti-plagerism software.
  10. Use sites like Coursework.info and http://antistudy.com/ to help with ideas, phrasing and structure of your essay.
  11. Always spell check. Read through. Sleep on it, then read it through again.
