CTJT Diploma in Freelance Writing review and online Alternative to degree in journalism

One of the online courses I've completed since leaving school, is the Diploma in Freelance Journalism with CTJT- run by Cleland Thom, one of the UK's leading corporate media and communications trainers.

College: CTJT
Qualification/level: Diploma - I'd guess GCSE - A level
Subject: Freelance Writing
Cost: Around £250
The skinny:
  • This site teaches the full monty to become a properly qualified journalist -I chose a short course, the depth of every course is brilliant
  • This course consisted of 8-10 units, each with a written assignment at the end. This is emailed in for marking and feedback is received really very quickly.
  • Feedback is always constructive... at some points I found too harsh, but deep down you know it's right. This course makes you stretch and grow for sure.
  • Cleland is very good for communicating and responding to questions, I've emailed him over several things since completing the course and he's totally helpful.
  • Says it takes 3-6 months - I took a long break in the middle so it took me 6 months in the end but can be done much faster.
  • Get on the mailing list, or follow their Twitter to look for course discounts which often spring up, to make this a great value course if you're a writer creative type.

Real deal or cowboy college: Real deal and accredited by real associations. It is rather specialist, for anyone looking to become a fully fledge journo, you can take the exams through this, without hitting uni and save the money with the benefit of having a really experienced and honest tutor in Cleland.
